What our readers found useful

WK

Wei Kang Lim

47, Senior Engineer · Ang Mo Kio

"I had been putting off learning about investing for years because everything I found online felt like it was written for someone younger, or for someone who already knew the vocabulary. Course 1 from Merlion Ledger was the first time I read something that felt like it was actually addressing my situation."

Course 1 · Completed March 2025

PN

Priya Nair

52, HR Director · Bishan

"The CPF module in Course 2 was genuinely eye-opening. I had always treated my CPF as a separate matter from my investment thinking. The course helped me see how the two fit together, and I came away with much better questions to bring to my financial adviser."

Course 2 · Completed February 2025

DT

David Tan

55, Principal Consultant · Clementi

"I have held a mix of unit trusts and SGX shares for years without a clear framework for reviewing them. Course 3 gave me a very practical method for an annual review that I could actually follow, including a fee-audit worksheet that revealed I was paying considerably more in charges than I had realised."

Course 3 · Completed January 2025

SC

Susan Cheah

44, Secondary School Teacher · Tampines

"The weekly reading format worked well for my schedule. I could sit down on a Sunday evening for an hour and come away with something new and clear. The glossary in Course 1 alone was worth the fee — I kept coming back to it throughout the module series."

Course 1 · Completed March 2025

RB

Rajiv Balakrishnan

49, Operations Manager · Jurong

"What I appreciated most was the consistent honesty about what the course is and is not. At no point did anyone try to push a product or suggest they had a method that others did not. It really felt like education in the plain sense of the word."

Courses 1 & 2 · Completed April 2025

YH

Yvonne Heng

58, Finance Manager · Queenstown

"I work in finance myself, but investment portfolio management is a different discipline. Course 3 gave me a clear framework for reviewing my personal holdings that I had been putting off for a couple of years. The behavioural module was unexpectedly useful — I recognised several of my own patterns in it."

Course 3 · Completed February 2025

Reading journeys in more detail

The Challenge

Melvin, 51, had accumulated substantial CPF savings and a small share portfolio over 25 years but had no way to evaluate whether the two were working together sensibly. He knew enough to feel uncertain, but not enough to ask the right questions in an adviser meeting.

The Approach

He completed Courses 1 and 2 over four months, working through each module at one evening per week. The CPF integration section in Course 2 addressed his situation directly, and the Investment Policy Statement template gave him a structure he could bring to his licensed adviser.

What Changed

Melvin arrived at his next adviser meeting with a written two-page summary of his situation, his time horizon, and a list of specific questions about CPFIS eligibility and fee structures. The adviser remarked it was the most prepared a new client had been in years.

— Melvin Ong, 51, Bukit Timah · April 2025

The Challenge

Caroline, 46, had three separate unit trust investments from three different periods in her career, managed through different platforms and purchased for different reasons at different moments. She had not reviewed any of them in four years and was not sure how to start.

The Approach

She enrolled directly in Course 3, having a reasonable existing vocabulary about investment categories. The fee-audit worksheet and the unit trust factsheet module gave her a systematic way to review each holding in turn, rather than treating the whole portfolio as an undifferentiated problem.

What Changed

After completing the course, Caroline consolidated two of her three unit trust positions and scheduled an annual review reminder for each March. She described it as having finally given the pile of papers on her desk an address and a filing system.

— Caroline Yeo, 46, Serangoon · March 2025
